What is an electrostatic precipitator (ESP)?

An electrostatic precipitator is a particulate collection device that removes particles from a gas stream using the force of an induced electrostatic charge. ESPs are highly efficient filters that operate at a very low pressure drop (0.4kPa) and can easily remove fine particulate matter such as dust or smoke from the air stream.

Unlike wet scrubbers and fabric filters which apply energy directly to the flowing fluid medium, an ESP applies energy only to the particulate matter being collected. This means ESPs consume very low volumes of electricity to run.

Meanwhile, acid mist electrostatic precipitators (MESP) are typically used in sulfuric acid plants to separate fine particulate and sulfuric acid mist from the SO2-rich gas stream, hence protecting the SO2/SO3 converter catalyst downstream. An MESP delivers critical advantages:

  • Very low pressure drop whilst maintaining high mist elimination
  • fine particulate capture without blocking
  • available in multiple parallel modules for larger gas volumes
  • available in a series design for higher collection efficiencies

Applications and performance

TAPC engineers are specially trained in ESP technology and can devise solutions for capturing submicron particulate, heavy metals, mists and fumes from process gas streams. The type of ESP selected will depend on the emission:

  • Dry ESPs are used for gas temperatures between 100°C and 400°C with medium to heavy dust loads.
  • Wet ESPs are suited to cleaning a mixed stream of droplets and particulate.
